Head Coach & Running Coach

Nigel Pietsch

Nigel is a former Australian Age Group Half Ironman Champ and a Hawaii veteran, combining his years of training and racing with his background in sports science to ensure the Lakers have a highly-qualified head coach.

Nigel provides the club with training programs, coaching and general fitness advice to members. He leads the Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday run sessions, the Friday night open water swimming skill development session and Saturday’s A-grade ride, along with running the club’s beginners programs. He has been coaching at the Lakers and professionally for more than 15 years and has successfully introduced hundreds of people to the sport, through beginners’ clinics, education courses and individual programs getting them ready for their first triathlon, continuing to work with many of them to keep producing PBs and enhancing their triathlon experience. He has also had success working with high performance athletes, guiding numerous triathletes to state titles, national podiums, Kona qualifications and World Championship podiums.

What drives Nigel, however, is his interest in seeing people set goals and meet them, and taking steps to improve. Whether it’s taking part in a mini triathlon, a marathon or an Ironman, Nigel thrives on watching people work to improve themselves through triathlon, and achieve their goals or at least give them a red hot go.

Nigel is a Level 2 Triathlon Coach, has completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Exercise & Sport Science) and a Graduate certificate in Strength and Conditioning. He has been involved in triathlon since 1996. Over that time he has been a competitor, racing in the open category in South Australia for many years, including winning the state long course Duathlon title in 2003, placing at national age group championships and he completed the Hawaii Ironman in 2000. He is a very respected and experienced runner with a 2.38 marathon PB.

Nigel was president of Triathlon SA for four years and was involved at a committee level for more than 10 years. He played a major role in the Triathlon SA junior program and acted as office administrator. He was awarded life membership of Triathlon SA in 2015 and Lakers Triathlon Club Life membership in 2016.

Please contact Nigel if you have any questions about our training sessions or individual coaching.
